The Function of Electrical Transformers

by Delba Electrical

One type of electrical transformer includes the gray, cylindrical devices atop the poles of outdoor power transmission lines. They are used to convert the voltage of electricity between one circuit and the next. The coils that they use are called inductively coupled conductors. Heat builds up in transformers, and removing it is important for their proper function. The majority of outdoor transformers are oil-cooled, but other types use forced-oil, forced-air, water or a combination of these techniques for cooling.

The different voltages of power lines are what makes transformer necessary. Voltage going from one line to the next directly could cause serious problems otherwise. There are two different kinds of transformers. The first is known as a 'step up' converter. This particular kind of transformer takes low voltage and then converts this energy into high voltage. A 'step down' transformer does the opposite- taking high voltage and converting it into low voltage.

Transformers use a process called "electromagnetic induction" to handle the difference in voltage without changing the frequency. Oil-filled transformers that have been in operation for more than 50 years aren't unusual. Effective cooling is a critical requirement, as the high temperatures created inside these devices can damage their insulation and result in various problems.

Transformers are also used in more places than just outside in power lines. For example, transformers might even be seen on toy train sets, changing between one voltage and another. Any time voltage needs to be changed, a transformer is the device that is often used to make this happen.

A step-down transformer operates by accepting an electric current that enters from one end, then conducting it through numerous winding coils. The number of coils decreases as they near the transformer's other end. The coils decrease the amount of vibration (and hence the voltage) of the current as it passes through. The end result is a stepped-down electrical current.

The high-voltage current carried by an outdoor transmission line (often 7200 volts) must be reduced before it enters the home. The step-down is necessary because home appliances use a much lower-voltage current, 220 to 240 volts at most.

Some devices might use even less, like 110-120 as is the case for devices such as a TV or computer. If the electricity from the volts in the power lines were allowed to move directly into your devices it would likely fry them or worse, causing damage to not only the device, but possibly the surrounding area.

To prevent this type of damage, transformers reduce the current's voltage to the manageable level that's supplied by your home's electrical sockets.

Transformer Repairs

These essential devices require occasional transformer repairs to keep them operating as they should. All transformer repairs should be conducted by a certified professional. Without the proper training and certification, someone attempting to repair a transformer could inadvertently cause severe harm - to property, themselves or other people.
