Are Pests Taking Over? Try Out These Tips!

by Virginia Powell

Pest infestations are an all too common problem. As a homeowner, you need to educate yourself on the best pest control measures. This is the only way to keep your home free of unwanted pests. This article is loaded with useful pest control tips you can utilize to protect your family, so read on to learn more.

Do not buy pesticides that are labeled as being for outdoor use. While these products may get rid of the pests that you are trying to battle, they usually have a much higher concentration of chemicals than those for indoors. This means they will leave harmful poisons in the air for much longer.

Pests love a cluttered house! The more stuff you have laying around on the floor or shoved into cupboards, the more places they have to hide and thrive. A couple times a year you should be going through your entire place and getting rid of things you no longer need or use. The less things you have, the less things they have to hide in and under.

Make sure your home's roof and water sills are draining properly. Standing water can lead to pests. If you've got puddles forming that just won't go away, look to the root cause and fix it. Sometimes it's as easy as cleaning out a gutter. Otherwise, you may get more unwanted visitors than you bargained for.

Be sure to close up any openings by which rodents could enter your home. This is especially important before winter, when rodents will be looking for a warm spot to take shelter. Look for cracks and holes of all sizes around the windows, vents and foundation of your home. Some small rodents need less than a quarter inch to squeeze into your home.

Carpenter ants are attracted to damp wood; therefore, if you notice an increase in carpenter ants, check your pipes and roof for leaks. Once you have found where your problem is located, fix the leak and replace the wood to help quickly rid your home of carpenter ants. You may also want to call in a pest-control expert to treat your home.

Trim (or even remove) any foliage or tree limbs that happen to be leaning onto your home. These limbs and wild brush act as exceptional climbing tools for bugs and rodents. It's like having a ladder attached right to your home, a sure welcome sign for an infestation. Proper trimming can help keep these pests at bay.

The simplest and most obvious way to keep pests away from the inside and outside of your home? Keep it clean! A clean house is a pest-free house. Pests like to thrive in damp and dirty areas, so if they can't find a place like that in your house, then they won't want to stay there!

Keep standing water at a minimum if you want to keep mosquitoes away. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, so if you have a small puddle in your yard you are giving them a perfect place to breed. To prevent this you can walk through your yard after rain storms to ensure that your yard does not become their breeding ground.

Hornets love to find sweet foods and even crumbs of those foods, so the less of that which is available in your home, the less wasps will be enticed to come inside. Wash down your counters and cutting boards as you use them, and keep your trash bins clean and well sealed.

As was mentioned in the beginning of this article, pest infestations are an extremely common problem for almost all homeowners. If you are currently experiencing a pest control problem or simply want to avoid dealing with one in the future, apply all the great pest control tips you've read about in this article. By taking effective action you can keep your home pest-free.
