Reasons For Enrolling In First Aid Or Basic Life Support Courses

by Phyllis Ashford

When a heart has stopped beating or someone is no longer breathing, every second without treatment is critical. It can mean the difference between life and death. Although many employers make basic life support courses a mandatory job requirement, everyone can benefit from knowing what, how and when to apply emergency treatment. It is knowledge that could save a life.

Taking a class that teaches basic techniques in emergency treatment is something that anyone can do. Classes are available for free at many local hospitals, fire stations, community centers, and are even available on line. There are no prerequisites and classes are available for all age levels.

Workshops are available on an array of various safety topics, from the treatment of burns to wounds and insect bites. Most classes will teach students ways that they can detect the signs of a stroke or a heart attack. Subjects such as surviving a natural disaster and poison control are also taught.

Children should also be taught the techniques of fundamental first aid. Classes for children often include the study of surviving in the wilderness, fire safety, and elementary wound and broken bone triage. They can also be taught to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator, or AED.

Children who are very young and who are knowledgeable in first aid techniques will be likely to become upset if those techniques must be implemented. Even the youngest of children can learn safety concepts. One effective way that they can be taught is by playing games.

Learning the principals of cardiopulmonary resuscitation is something that everyone should do. CPR is an emergency technique used when the victims heart has stopped beating or they have stopped breathing. Applying CPR helps to keep blood and oxygen circulating through the body until medical personnel arrives.

The American Heart Association believes that even those who are not trained can lend assistance when no trained medical assistance is available by beginning hands-only CPR. Hands-only CPR is the administration of approximately one hundred chest compressions per minute. Compressions should continue until the patient begins to move, or until qualified medical personnel take over.

Learning the principles of emergency care can help parents provide a safer environment for their family. Knowing the elements of infant first aid is an absolutely necessary skill for new parents and daycare providers. Infant aid is taught as a separate course.

The form of cardiopulmonary resuscitation that is used on babies and toddlers is different from that used on an adult, and is taught separately. An infants survival may depend upon those differences. It is good idea for everyone to learn both types of CPR, but for a brand new parent, daycare provider, teacher, or anyone who works around small children it is crucial.

Becoming certified in basic first aid or emergency medical techniques can greatly increase a persons confidence in their ability to react in a stressful situation. Even those who would normally become overwhelmed in an emergency may find that their increased knowledge allows them to remain calm and helpful. Taking life support courses is beneficial to everyone.
