Advantages resulting from their use cannot be brushed aside. Sustainability remains their biggest advantage. This comes from their ability to be regenerated. The main element used to make renewable energy is free and readily available. This makes it cheap to produce power by reducing the overall cost. Alternative power does not produce carbon dioxide gas as opposed to use of fossil fuel. This assists the fight against global warming. Biomass, sewage treatment gases and other gases produced from organic waste cannot be said to be raising carbon dioxide levels because they take advantage of natural decaying process.

Production of this form of power is environmentally friendly. It does not produce chemicals that are harmful to the environment. This can explain the zeal in pushing for generation this clean power and its use in place of those that are obtained from petroleum products.

Production of power on a large-scale usually occurs in the rural areas. Power plants set up create employment opportunities to residents living in these areas. Roads leading to the power plant serve to open up the rural areas. A power plant can also act as a tourist attraction site. Economic benefits of setting up these power plants make investing in them worthwhile.

Harnessing of alternative power has its own short comings. Setting up of power plants that produce clean power is capital intensive. Producing it on a large-scale can only be done by the government or well-funded nongovernmental organizations.

Production of a large quantity of power enough to meet daily power requirements of a nation is a challenge. Fossil fuels can produce a large amount of power with ease. In order for this power to be sustainable, folks must decrease their daily power usage. The best solution to this is setting up of many power plants in order to balance production and consumption.

Reliability remains the greatest problem facing generation of this power. Its production is dependent on prevailing weather conditions. Solar panels need sunshine, hydro-power requires rain to fill dams while wind turbines need wind power. Unpredictable weather pattern makes power production erratic causing a reduction in their reliability.

The world is shifting towards production and utilization of renewable energy. This discussion has been shaped by climate change. With this line of thought, the trend is likely to persist.
