How dose a water tube boiler work?

By defining a water tube boiler, we say an equipment carrying tubes with furnace heating outside to produce steam in order to generate power. As <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_boiler_types,_by_manufacturer">Water Tube Boilers</a> consist of inside running water tubes with heating appliances outside, they are different from shell type boilers. To attain a level of much higher pressure, a small tube diameter is attached in order to gain same pressure.

In the process of fuel burning in the furnace, water gets hot in steam generating tubes; resultantly a hot gas is produced. The smaller boilers have to rely upon additional separate tubes in the furnace, in order to produce steam; on the other hand, the large utility boilers are designed with steam generating water-filled tubes.

At the next level, heated water rises and goes into the steam drum. This is the place where filled up steam is drawn off the top of the drum. Sometimes, steam reenters the furnace through a super heater, where it becomes superheated. This steam becomes superheated after getting heat above boiling point at a given pressure. It can be defined as a dry gas and that is the reason for its usage to drive turbines as turbine blades can be severely damaged by water droplets.

Steam drum contains large size down comer tubes, through which cool water returns to the feed water drum, where the feed water supply is pre-heated. In this way, effeciency of the boiler is increased as exhausted gases are also used to pre-heat the air blown into the furnace to heat up the feed water supply. The boilers of this type in thermal power station are called steam generating units.

For plant application, Water Tube Steam Boilers are very much necessary to produce steam. Boilers working on natural water flow system are also in use. Water tube boilers which are able to generate steam in a huge amount with much high quality are usually used in ships and factories successfully. They are also rendered to largely work in central-station power plants. Further, paper mills, steel mills, chemical plants, and oil refineries also rely upon these boilers to work on. The older designs of water tube boilers were too much risky to use but the latest models are highly safe and secure in case of catastrophic failure.

Going through details, the size of these boilers is enormous and the production capacity can exceed up to few million pounds per hour. As they are structured to get the hottest temperatures, consequently they are able to cope with steam pressures as high as 5,000 psig. For the single form package unit, small sized water tube boilers are perfectly suitable and easy to prepare. The large sized boilers, on the other hand, are quite appropriate to be assembled to the work site for they are impossible to be fabricated in package form.

The most important item in water tube boiler inspection is reviewing of raw material test reports. ASME Code section I mandated the water boiler material testing for safety aspects. The water boiler manufacturer must prepare and carry out inspection and testing during boiler construction. These inspections and tests need to be done based confirmed inspection and test plan issued by water boiler purchaser. Water tube boiler pre-shipment inspection must be done after construction process was completed. The water tube boiler preshipment inspection might need to be done based of buyer bank's requirement. In this case independent third party pre-shipment inspection agency will make visual quality, quantity, packing and marking inspection. The loading supervision will be done when it is mandated on the letter of credit.

It is recommended that the water boiler purchasers use the services of third party inspection companies for making vendor inspection and as well as the pre-shipment inspection. By this action they will reduce the risk of receiving of non-conforming water tube boiler in their plant.
