The Main Objectives of Brand Management

by Steven Harrison

There is no consumer product that does not have to fight for its marketplace. Consumers are spoilt for choice and manufacturers have to do whatever they can to convince customers to try their products and to keep using it. This is where brand management comes in. Once a specific product becomes instantly recognizable and the perceived product of choice, customers award it a certain kind of loyalty.

When a label is designed, it is important to ensure that it makes very definite promises and that it creates well defined expectations. These promises need to be unique and it must offer something none of the competitors do. It is also vital to make sure that these expectations will be fulfilled consistently.

The next step would be to make sure that consumers become aware of the label and all the promises that it entails. The aim is to make sure that shoppers recognize the product and at the same time to remember the promises and expectations associated by it. Captivating catchphrases and dominant graphics are used to achieve this type of instant awareness.

The fact that consumers are aware of a specific label does not necessarily translate into sales. It is necessary to create consumer loyalty. This means that shoppers must prefer the specific product above all others. Consumers grow to trust the label and they become less responsive to advertising from competitors.

The process involved in defining, establishing and maintaining a label is complex and requires special skill. Managers in charge of these matters need to be well versed in strategic planning, marketing and finance. It is necessary to know everything there is to know about the competitors, their products and their marketing plans.

The establishment and maintenance of a label can be costly and time consuming, but with efficient brand management t is possible to project a product into a market place leader. Consumers are fickle and it is imperative to take steps that shoppers do not become disappointment due to unavailability, sudden price changes or a change in the way the product is presented. Many consumers are fiercely loyal to specific products.
